This Just In… On any one day in 2011, U.S. staffing firms employed an average of 2.8 million workers, reported the American Staffing Association. During the course of the year, more than 12.9 million temporary and contract workers found work through staffing firms. Temporary and contract staffing is growing, increasing 6.6 percent between May 2011 and May 2012. This trend is likely to continue as the economy continues its tepid recovery, making many employers reluctant to bring on permanent staff. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the employment services industry, which comprises employment placement agencies, temporary help services, and professional employer organizations, is projected to add 631,300 jobs, an annual rate of increase of 2.1 percent, and reach 3.3 million by 2020, placing this industry among those with the largest projected employment growth. In addition to temporary and contract workers, independent contractors comprise a significant portion of the U.S. workforce. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated there were 10.3 million independent contractors in the U.S. in 2010. Nontraditional work arrangements can create unexpected risk exposures.
