Thinking about buying a new car? Buy a safer one by picking one from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 2016 TOP SAFETY PICK list.
To make the list, the IIHS says “[A] vehicle must earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — as well as a basic rating for front crash prevention.” Vehicles on the 2016 TOP SAFETY PICK+ list must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention in addition to good ratings in the five crashworthiness tests.
The list ranks autos by size, with classifications for minicars (such as the Mini Cooper), small cars (such as the Acura ILX), midsize cars (Chevrolet Malibu), midsize luxury cars (Audi A3), large cars (Toyota Avalon), large luxury cars (Acura RLX), small SUVs (BMW XI), midsize SUVs (Chevrolet Equinox), midsize luxury SUVs (Acura MDX), large SUVs (Audi Q7), minivans and large pickups.
The IIHS cautions “larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones. Thus, a small car that’s a TOP SAFETY PICK+ or TOP SAFETY PICK doesn’t necessarily afford more protection than a bigger car that doesn’t earn the award.”
