Shockingly Few Americans Are Prepared for Disaster

A recent survey by the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) found that only 35 percent of respondents said that what they knew about last year's storms would motivate them enough to prepare for storms this year.

Only 45 percent of respondents in hurricane-prone states have an emergency bag. 63 percent have not conducted a home inventory of their possessions.

In addition, only half of the people surveyed said they had any familiarity with their local evacuation plan or had prepared a plan with their family.

As far as being prepared for the post-disaster work required to restore their property, the survey revealed that

  • 72 percent are at least somewhat familiar with the signs of contractor fraud and abuse;
  • 14 percent said they would pay upfront for the rebuilding or repair costs if it meant getting their property fixed more quickly, while 20 percent said they aren't sure if they would; and
  • 10 percent of residents would accept an unsolicited offer from someone to make repairs to their home; 16 percent aren't sure if they would.

We encourage all our friends and clients to prepare themselves in the event of a hurricane or other disaster. For more information please read "Is Your Home Ready for Windstorm Season?" in this issue.
