Important Travel Insurance Add-ons

  • Cancel Anytime Coverage: Some insurers offer policies with a Cancel Anytime feature which allows purchasers to cancel their trip for almost any unforeseen reason and even receive reimbursement for all or a portion of their non-refundable travel deposits. With the Coronavirus this is becoming a very popular option.
  • Missed Port of Call Coverage: If a cruise misses a scheduled port of call or replaces it with another port of call, there may be coverage to compensate travelers for the missed port of call, up to the maximum benefit listed in the policy.
  • Per trip or Annual policies: Travel insurance can be purchased on either a per-trip or annual basis. The U.S. Travel Insurance Association notes that more than 80 percent of travel insurance purchased by Americans is purchased on a per-trip basis and covers trip cancellation; interruption; travel delay; baggage delay; lost, stolen or damaged baggage; medical expenses and medical evaluation expenses.
  • Frequent travelers may want to consider purchasing an annual plan. These plans typically include medical and medical evacuation coverage. Many HMO plans do not cover anything except emergency treatment out of their service area; Original Medicare and many Medicare supplement plans do not cover medical services rendered outside the U.S. and its territories.
