Life insurance can make a huge difference to the family of a wage earner who dies prematurely. It also makes a huge difference to the U.S. economy. Consider the contributions that life insurance companies make:

  • At the end of 2014, U.S. life insurers had more than $3,632 billion in investments. Insurers buy the stocks and bonds that help businesses expand and grow, the mortgage loans that help families buy homes, and real estate investments such as commercial developments and shopping malls.
  • 54 percent of Americans had some sort of life insurance protection, whether group or individual.
  • 95 percent of life insurance beneficiaries rated themselves as “satisfied” or “extremely satisfied” by the claims experience. Legitimate life insurers pay claims promptly, only contesting claims when a death results from suicide (excluded from coverage) or during the commission of an illegal act. An insurer may also deny a claim if the application contained a material misrepresentation, or one that would likely affect the insurer’s decision to write the policy. An example might be someone who’d suffered a heart attack but failed to disclose it on an application.
