Traveling Abroad with Medicare: What You Need to Know If you’re a Medicare recipient planning an international trip, it’s important to understand how your coverage works outside the United States. While Medicare offers excellent protection at home, its international benefits are extremely limited—and that can leave travelers vulnerable to unexpected medical costs. Limited Coverage Exceptions Original Medicare generally does not cover care received outside the U.S. However, there are rare exceptions. For example, Medicare may pay for emergency services in Canada or Mexico if the foreign hospital is closer to your location than a U.S. one. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited emergency coverage abroad, but benefits vary widely by provider and plan. Medigap Plans Can Help Certain Medigap policies—specifically Plans C, D, F, G, M, and N—include foreign travel emergency coverage. These plans typically pay 80% of eligible medical costs after a $250 deductible, up to a lifetime limit of $50,000. If you travel frequently, this supplemental coverage can be a valuable safety net. Consider Travel Insurance Because Medicare’s international coverage is minimal, many travelers choose to purchase travel health insurance. These policies can cover hospital stays, emergency evacuations, doctor visits, and more—offering peace of mind in unfamiliar settings. Prescription Medications Medicare Part D does not cover prescriptions filled outside the U.S. Be sure to bring enough medication for your entire trip, along with copies of your prescriptions. Final Thoughts Before you pack your bags, review your Medicare plan, explore supplemental options, and talk to your agent about travel insurance. A little preparation goes a long way toward a safe and stress-free journey. [return to top]
