This Just In...
Every December, Christmas trees cause about 400 home fires in the U.S. Tragically, an average of 14 people die. According to the National Fire Protection Organization, each of these fires causes an average of $55,000 in damage.
To keep your family safe during the holidays, make sure your Christmas tree lights carry an independent testing laboratory label. Make sure you know whether your lights are for indoor or outdoor use. Decorations should be flame retardant or flame resistant. Don’t leave the tree lights on when you’re not home.
If you buy a live tree, make sure you keep plenty of water in its stand. When the branches become dry, discard the tree. A dry tree will literally burst into flames, and the fire will spread quickly to the ceiling, walls and furniture. It takes less than a minute to engulf a room in flames. If you’d like dramatic proof, just search the Internet for videos of burning Christmas trees.
Have a safe holiday season.
