This Just In ...

Now that several states allow both medical and recreational marijuana use (although federal law still classifies it as a Schedule I controlled substance), what does that mean for drivers?

Two large European studies found that drivers with THC in their blood were roughly twice as likely to be culpable for a fatal crash than drivers who had not used drugs or alcohol. THC is the primary psychoactive component in marijuana.

The role marijuana plays in crashes is often unclear because it can be detected in body fluids for days or even weeks after intoxication and because people frequently combine it with alcohol. Use of both marijuana and alcohol appears to create a greater risk than use of either drug by itself.

The Governors Highway Safety Association reports that many states have “zero tolerance” laws for drivers who have marijuana or THC in their bloodstream. They include Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin. To stay safe, avoid driving when under the influence of marijuana, even if you are using it legally for medical purposes.
