Businesses with more rigorous accounting systems suffer fewer workplace injuries, according to a study published in the Journal of Management Accounting Research. Looking at the records of 1300 firms the researchers found that those with fewer workplace injuries had to restate their earnings less often or had more accurate earnings forecasts. The process of preparing financial statements, they said, leads firm management teams to collect more and better information to help them better understand the importance of factors like workplace safety. Rigorous accounting can quantify the benefits of workplace safety for managers and show them the full costs of those injuries, including disruption in productivity and the legal, reputational, and regulatory costs.
