This Just In…

November is long-term care awareness month, a good time to consider the following statistics:

  • More than 34 million Americans provide unpaid care to another adult who is ill or disabled. These unpaid caregivers provide approximately 90 percent of the long-term care services needed.

  • Between 2000 and 2030, the number of people age 65+ is expected to increase 101 percent, while the number of family members available to care for them is expected to increase only 25 percent.

  • Caregiving takes a physical toll. A 2007 study by Richard Schulz, Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Institute on Aging, found “heavy caregivers” had increased depression and worse health than non- or moderate caregivers. Over time, heavy caregivers declined more rapidly than noncaregivers and had higher mortality rates.

  • Caregiving is costly. The National Alliance for Caregiving/AARP found that about 37 percent of caregivers for someone age 50+ reduced their work hours or quit their job, and incurred out-of-pocket costs averaging $5,531 in 2007.

Long-term care insurance provides funding for your long-term care needs, which can prevent your loved ones from incurring these physical and financial strains. Please call us for more information.
