This Just In ... A New Way to Offer Health Benefits: What Is an ICHRA?

If you’re self-employed or work for a small business that doesn’t offer traditional health insurance, there’s a new option worth knowing about: the Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement, or ICHRA.

An ICHRA allows employers to reimburse employees—tax-free—for individual health insurance premiums and certain medical expenses. Instead of offering a group plan, the employer sets a monthly budget, and employees choose the coverage that works best for them, often through the ACA Marketplace or private insurers.

This approach gives small businesses more control over costs and gives employees more flexibility in choosing doctors, coverage levels, and networks that fit their needs.

In 2025, ICHRAs are gaining popularity as a modern alternative to group health plans. They’re especially useful for businesses with fewer than 50 employees, seasonal staff, or remote teams.

If you’re a business owner or employee curious about how an ICHRA might work for you, talk to your agent. They can help you explore whether this flexible benefit model fits your needs—and how to get started
