Chicago, Washington Top Mover Destinations

A United Van Lines analysis of moves contracted during the summer found that Chicago, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Boston were the nation’s most popular destinations. However, those cities also were high on the “exit” list, too.

Based on volume and destinations, United Van found the most popular “move to” cities were, in order: Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas, Phoenix, New York, Minneapolis and San Diego. The top “move from” cities were: Washington, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Phoenix, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver and San Jose.

United said 71.6 percent of those moving either had a new job or were being transferred. About 13 percent moved because of retirement and 10 percent moved because of health concerns.

Meanwhile, the global relocation company Cartus is questioning to what degree, if any, the real estate recovery will help improve attitudes among workers eligible for relocation.

The company notes that the recession made many key employees reluctant to move because of the uncertainty of being able to sell their homes. With the resurgence of the market, however, the company now questions whether employees will want to move — especially given the lack of inventory and likelihood that top-choice properties will be gone by the time relocation packages are completed. A possible result, speculates Cartus, is that top-level employees will become comfortable with renting property — and possibly leave the ranks of homeownership forever.
