Luxury Bathrooms: Good-bye Bidets, Hello His-and-Her Showers

Bathroom features are changing in luxury home buying, with his-and-her shower stalls becoming increasingly popular, bidets on their way out and hot tubs essentially gone.

A survey of builders by the NAHB’s Home Innovation Research Lab found that, compared to 2008, demand for hot tubs was down nearly 35 percent, bidets down 9.5 percent and bar sinks down 8.5 percent.

Alternatively, calls for separate shower stalls in the master bath were up 12.9 percent, standard bathtubs up 9.5 percent and chrome lavatory sink faucets up 25 percent.

“Since the recession, there have been a lot of trade-offs,” said Ed Hudson, director of the group’s market-research division. He noted that luxury homes have shrunk slightly, from 4,190 square feet in 2008 to 4,049 square feet in 2013.
